Frequently Asked Questions
The term acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques. American practices of acupuncture incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea and other countries. Acupuncture promotes natural healing and improves functioning.
Acupuncture filaments are stainless steel, solid, and hair-thin. People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel minimal or no pain as the needles are inserted. If any unpleasant sensation is experienced during insertion, it is often compared to a mosquito bite and disappears very quickly. I take great care making my patients comfortable so that they may relax while the needles are in place. Many people even fall asleep during treatment! Following a session it is common to feel a tremendous sense of relaxation.
In the hands of a licensed practitioner acupuncture is a very safe and effective treatment for many acute and chronic conditions. Acupuncture has been safely used for thousands of years.
Acupuncture filaments are solid unlike the hollow needles used by doctors. They are small and hair-thin and can literally be bent with your pinky. Only sterile, disposable needles are used so there is no risk of infection.
If your insurance plan covers acupuncture, we provide you with a payment receipt and billing code to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. We do not bill health insurance companies directly. If you are unsure whether or not your insurance company will cover the cost of acupuncture, please contact your insurance company directly.
If your pain is the result of a motor vehicle accident (MVA) my clinic will work with you and submit documentation directly. Learn more about acupuncture following a motor vehicle accident.
During your first office visit, we discuss your health condition, lifestyle, and behavior. I want to obtain a complete picture of your treatment needs and behaviors that may contribute to your condition. If you are seeing a Western medical practitioner, it will be helpful to know what treatments you are receiving so that we may work in tandem with each other to provide the best care possible for you. The initial treatment may last between 1 and 1.5 hours, all subsequent treatments are closer to 45 minutes.
The number of treatments needed differs from person to person. During your initial consultation I provide you with a full assessment and treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. We expect to see a change in your condition after at least the first four treatments. Following the fifth session, we will re-evaluate the efficacy of treatment.
If not, please don’t hesitate to contact us we are happy to help.
